Swan Lake

Last Sunday we went to a performance of Swan Lake, "El Lago de los Cisnes" by the Russian Classical Ballet school. I've been desperate to see a live performance for years, so this was a dream come true. I'm now trying to persuade my mum to go see The Nutcracker - it won't take much.

 One thing I don't quite understand though is Spanish etiquette in theatres. My first encounter of this was in London this summer when I went to see Mamma Mia! There was a Spanish family sat next to me (I was earwigging) and they were munching on popcorn all way through the production. How not okay. It was really frustrating and to be frank, I thought they were really rude for doing that.

 However, after going to see Swan Lake I realised that having popcorn is  the equivalent to us guys at home having an ice-cream in the interval. So we thought "when in Rome" and decided to have some ourselves. It was gross, it was just plain popcorn; we even didn't get the choice of sweet or salty. 

 So other than watching ballet in real-life instead of on the TV, it was also a cultural learning curve for me. From now on I won't be ranting and raving about popcorn-eaters, as long as they're not too loud.

It’s not you, it’s the requirements of my degree

You may be wondering why you haven’t heard from us for a while. That’s because we’ve broken up, moved out and moved on. In other words, we’ve moved on to our second semester abroad! From now on, you’ll be getting separate blog posts about different experiences in different places, but don’t worry, it’s not all change. There’ll still be a fair amount of bad puns, sarcasm and general complaining about the challenges and embarrassing situations we’ll most certainly encounter. My second semester will be spent studying in Forli, Italy. I’ve been living in Forli for almost a week now, and the university transition has been much smoother than when I moved to Granada. Being vegetarian in Spain

Being a veggie in Spain As only my most devoted fans will know (Hi, mum), I follow a vegetarian diet which involves removing meat, fish, and products such as gelatin and rennet. The Mediterranean is well known for its love of these food groups, so when I learnt that I would be moving to Granada for 6 months, renowned for its fresh swordfish, prawns and Spanish sausage, I was filled with fear. What would I eat? Would I be able to find Quorn or soya substitutions?   How would I survive?! Only being one week in to my semester abroad in Granada, I don’t have much experience, but I am here to tell you what I have learnt so far. Firstly, when in restaurants ordering a salad or dish which appears vegetarian, always be sure to ask for “sin carne o pescado”.
